Born in New York in 1959, Siri Hollander lived most of her childhood in Andalusia, Spain where her parents lived and worked as artists. Influenced by this artistic family background, she began sculpting at the age of seventeen. After apprenticing with several accomplished sculptors, both in America and in Spain, she began her own work focusing equally on steel and bronze.
Horses and other animals have been a focal point in Siri’s art. As a child, Siri was surrounded by horses and often witnessed the Bull fights in Spain. This gave Siri an instinct for the inherent drama of these animals. Through her work, Siri tries to capture the essence of these spirited animals.
Combining hemp fibers and a special cement mixture with steel allows her to create elegant stylized sculptures. By combining the fluidity of metal with a timelessness of stone, her pieces resonate well with nearly all surroundings. The materials she chooses also allow the collector to display the animal either indoors or outdoors, as the cement and steel can withstand the elements of weather. The characteristic rough texture and subtle movement of line in both her bronze and mixed media pieces make Siri’s work easily identifiable.
